Fu Fu
- Trainer Robert Walford
- Age 7yr old
- Race TypeNational Hunt
- Colour Brown Mare
This 7yo mare is by Eastern Anthem.
Her dam Kasamba was our very first mare who produced half sisters Welcometothejungle and Spellbound, both decent race mares themselves.
Fu Fu is a really likeable individual with a great attitude. She took her first run in a Taunton bumper on 11th March and ran a blinder. She had been ready to run for some time now so we were keen to get her going somewhere. On ground that we knew she would not like she did run very green and struggled with the bends. However she showed great heart to finish eighth behind some more experienced rivals. The winner had already won a bumper and the form is working out nicely. James Best was very happy after the race. Fu Fu will run again as soon as the ground dries out.
Fu Fu returned to Taunton on 4th April to run in the bumper, this time taking on the boys. She stayed handy all the way and ran a lot straighter and streetwise against some nice opposition, staying on in the closing stages to finish a very creditable fourth place. Fu Fu stuck her head down when it mattered and showed a great attitude. We were thrilled with her to say the least and will now look for a mares only bumper.
Fu Fu headed to Fontwell on the 12th June for a mares novice hurdle. She had schooled well and we were expecting a nice run. Unfortunately a horse fell in front of her at the second flight and hampered her badly, leaving James Best with a slipped saddle and nearly out the side door. James did his best to recover and got the mare back into the race. She jumped round impeccably and stayed on nicely at the end to finish second. We were all thrilled with her though left wondering what might had been without the interference….
The 2019/20 season has seen Fu Fu run well in handicaps at Exeter, Bangor and Fontwell without troubling the judge. However now down to a competitive mark we expect her to get her head in front very soon.
Back to Fontwell on her favoured heavy ground on the 26th January Fu Fu makes her initial running and jumps like a gazelle. Under a perfect ride from James Bowen she battles on up the hill to win quite cosily by a couple of lengths. A step up to three miles will be ideal. This mare really does have the heart of a lion.
Taunton on the 9th March and Fu Fu runs and jumps her heart out once more to finish a very creditable second place behind an improving sort that has won three of its last four races. Our little mare also gave the winner nine pounds, which on bottomless ground is one hell of a big ask. She thrives on her racing and will soon find the winning post again for sure.
